Don't buy into the stereotype of the lone, suffering writer.
No matter where you are as a writer, it's tough going it alone. Figuring when and where to write, knowing if what you're working on is all it can be, finishing a manuscript... these are all hard to do on your own.
That's where I come in. I can help you get started, get unstuck, and get it done.
Â
Let me help you make a plan, get started, or get unstuck
Sometimes we just need a little nudge. A gentle push. A bit of help hauling a heavy load up a flight of stairs. We'll meet for 90 minutes, and I'll help you find a way forward. Or, you can just pick my brain about different projects, types of writing, or whatever's on your mind. Â
"Working with Molly is akin to receiving a master class in writing and editing. She's a true polymath, able to teach all the finicky aspects of writing. Her ability to translate each topic into broadly understood terms is awe-inspiring."
"Molly's cheerful, sunny disposition made all four sessions enjoyable and inspiring! She sparkled with ideas and good humor and skillfully stimulated my eager mind! I count myself a lucky dog!!!"
"Taking Molly's specific feedback and insightful comments to heart helped push me to to the next level with my food journalism."
"Molly is the quintessential writing coach. I always looked forward to our 1:1 workshops, not just for the laughs (and there were many), but also for the precise advice and powerful tools she gave me to manage words."
"Most of what I know about writing, I have learned from Molly. Working with her, I learned the WHAT and the WHY behind good writing. "
"I cannot say enough about Molly as an editor and mentor. She's shaped me into a more concise and thoughtful writer, showing me how to have plenty of fun along the way. Molly is an incredible teacher."
"I needed a coach for a large project, and Molly provided the structure and encouragement I needed to stay on task. Whether you need someone to improve your project or motivate you to get it started, Molly’s the best partner a writer could ask for. "
Extensive experience, tons of training, and a love of writers
I've a published author, have been a professional writer for over 20 years, and have a Ph.D. from Stanford University. I've written and edited an insane amount of text of (almost) all kinds. I'm also a trained teacher, with experience teaching at Stanford University, Left Margin Lit, San Francisco Community College, UC Berkeley Extension, and more.
More important than any of that, I love helping people become the writers they want to be, and I'm grateful I have the experience to be truly helpful.Â
These plans give you a sense of how I work and the scope of what I offer. We can tweak any of them to suit your needs and schedule. I'm also always happy to put together a custom plan that fits you and your project.
Starting a project can daunting, and starting it well can set the stage for success. I'll help you define your project, get it started, and make a plan for finishing it.
To prepare for our first session, you'll fill out a detailed questionnaire that sets the stage for our first meeting, during which we'll make a plan that works for you and your schedule. We'll follow that up with three more weekly sessions to keep you on track (and fine-tune the plan!).
What's included: Initial assessment and 4 weekly 1-hour customized coaching sessions
For many people, this jump start is all they need. If you decide you want more support, we can set that up.
$597
Jump Start + Add feedback on weekly writing submissions (up to 2 double-spaced pages/500 words each) for $400.
Are you a copywriter who wants to write a memoir? An academic looking to reach a broader audience? A food writer with essays to pen? You've come to the right place.
In four weekly sessions, we'll note your challenges and formulate a plan for change. I'll take a look at your current writing and identify the patterns (word choices, phrasings, sentence structure, etc.) that you need to focus on to execute the change you want.
What's included: Initial assessment that includes feedback on a piece of writing (10 double-spaced pages/2,500 words max), 4 weekly 1-hour sessionsÂ
$997
Shift Gears + Add feedback on weekly submissions (2 double-spaced pages/500 words max each) for $400
You want to write, and yet you find yourself not writing. You are not alone.
We'll work together to figure out a writing practice and cadence that works for you (despite lots of claims out there, no, you don't need to write every day—we're all different!). Then I'll hold you accountable with weekly meetings and regular check-ins for two months (common wisdom may say that it takes three weeks to form a new habit, it's closer to two months in most cases).
What's included: Initial assessment and 8 weekly 1-hour custom coaching sessions
$1197
Make It a Habit + Add feedback on weekly writing submissions (up to 2 double-spaced pages/500 words each) for $800
If you need some tough love (and lots of it), this is for you! You have a project—an idea, a first draft, a half-done revision, a big mess of notes—and you want to get it done.
We'll take a look at the project, make a plan for getting it done, and then every week for 3 months (or every other week for 6 months), I'll hold you accountable for following that plan and provide support as challenges arise.Â
What's included: Initial assessment and 12 weekly or biweekly 1-hour custom coaching sessions
$1,797
Get It Done + Add feedback on weekly writing submissions (up to 2 double-spaced pages/500 words each) for $1,200
